Nic Dawson Kelly - Old Valentine
by Harry Cooke | Thursday 24 September 2009
Nic Dawson Kelly's album "Old Valentine" bursts into action with a harmonica and fast paced guitar reminiscent of Seasick Steve, then takes a turn with the unmistakable voice of Nic, which is backed by Buddy Holly-esque guitars and a strong beat.
On the first play of the album Nic's voice reminds me of Anthony and the Johnsons, however for me the similarities end there, and after a couple of listens I've lost that connection all together.
The album is well balanced with up-tempo tracks like opener "Thursday 3-23", "Ex-Lovers and Old Friends" and title track "Old Valentine" scattered throughout a thoughtful and in parts melancholic mix of folk-blues, with "The Musician" the obvious contender for being a single.
The album can be seen as a snapshot of the songs that Nic performs as they are different every time he plays them. He has already gained an impressive reputation as a live performer playing on the same bill as Laura Marling, Jamie T and Jason Molina.
I would like to see more of the vibrant tracks appear on the album as by the time "Delicate" finishes I am more than ready for the fun of "Ex-Lovers And Old Friends", but for the right evening this album can bring everything to the table.
