Get Cape.Wear Cape. Fly. - The Uprising

by Leon Rightback | Thursday 30 September 2010

Sam Duckworth is 3 albums and countless singles into his musical career now and his latest, self titled, album he seems to have somewhat shunned the indie-folk of the previous album and moved back to Sam’s emo roots.

A picked guitar and Sam’s voice open the track which then seems to rise and rise in tempo and volume until the full band are backing Sam in his efforts to raise a sleeping youth to protest. One of the issues with The Uprising is that the lyrics seem a little too unfocused. Is it “the man” or “the rules” that Sam wants to protest against. I’m not knocking Sam for wanting to highlight political issues in his music. In many ways I applaud him ask for more but his protest seems to lack the focus of a Billy Bragg or Frank Turner.

The one word that springs to mind as I sit here listening to “The Uprising” is anthematic. I can’t get away from it. In fact, I’ve had to remove the word from this review about 3 times already. I don’t know if it’s because I’m struggling for other ways to describe the track to you or that the track isn’t inspiring anything else in me. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a terrible track by any means. It drives forward at a pace and it’s going to be a song that will have the crowd singing the words back to the stage.
