Straight Lines - Loose Change

by Joe Richardson | Friday 13 August 2010

Over the last year or so that sleepontheleft.com has existed we have covered Straight Lines pretty extensively over that time. I’m pretty pleased to say that this is probably the best song that I’ve heard by the band in that time. Now, lets not get ahead of ourselves here, Loose Change is hardly reinventing the pop-punk wheel. What I’m saying is that this sounds like a band who have really worked hard on their song writing and grafted for hours over finer details to come to this result.

Close harmonies are something that modern pop punk bandies seem to favour and Straight Lines certainly make the most of them in the chorus of Loose Change where Jenkins lyrics take on an emo slant as he desperately soul searches to find answers to the eternal struggles of youth.

One area where Loose Change differers from earlier Straight Lines releases in the songs energy. They have always been a fast and powerful band but this now feels more channeled and, ultimately much more focused.

The choppy guitars, which seem to be ever present in pop punk songs are here but they seem to have more melody which helps jet off Jenkins vocals.

As I said at the start of this piece, Loose Change isn’t reinventing the wheel by a long stretch. What it is is evidence of a solid progression in a young bands career.
